"Without my routine, I am nothing"
How often do you find yourself slipping up on your nutrition and exercise/training regime when your routine gets interrupted?
Possibly quite a bit.
If this does occur and you are equipped with, at the least, some sound knowledge, I think this can lead to greater freedom and therefore offset the damage that can occur in these situations.
Lack of “basic” knowledge and understanding surrounding nutrition and training can lead to dichotomous ways of thinking and thus, potentially subjecting yourself to a life governed by restrictions and very likely, unfavourable behaviours.
So, for example, you find yourself out of your “routine” so you reside yourself to the fact that it’s a “bad” day or not gone to plan. This label might then lead to guilt, punishment and usually even more restriction e.g “I must get back on it Monday, but I’ll try cutting more of X out this time” or “I just need to be more strict with myself”. Wrong.
Labels of “good” or “bad” allow no freedom and often more restriction leads to more self sabotage.
So reframing how you view your failures or slip ups and how you view and perceive food, is really important.
Try overcoming this way of thinking by learning. Learn some of the basics around training and nutrition and ask someone you trust and respect for sound and well informed advice. Acquire and then apply this knowledge.
I think for most people, understanding food firstly for what it is (calories, macronutrients and micronutrients) is a great start...a great start that can lead to more freedom and less guilt and restriction.
